ATO 200 hp VFD converts power to a usable form. In the case of an induction motor, the electrical power supplied to it is converted to mechanical power through the rotation of the motor's rotor and the torque that it produces through motor slip. On the other hand, 200 hp VFD will convert its incoming power, a fixed voltage and frequency, to a variable voltage and frequency. This same concept is also the basis to vary the speed of the motor without the need of adjustable pulleys or gearing changes. The most significant benefit to using an 200hp VFD is energy saving. By matching system capacity to the actual load throughout the entire year, major savings in system motor energy use are achieved.
In comparison to a mains-powered motor with direct starting, ATO VFDs can reduce the starting current by up to 80% without affecting the starting torque. By enabling lower starting currents, the energy grid is placed under less stress when motors are powered up, reducing the impact on other local grid energy consumers. The resulting lower energy frequency fluctuations also mean that failures of electrical equipment can be reduced.
